The Skin Files

The truth is out there. We has unclassified the secret workings of the skin and cracked the reasons behind the most common skin misbehaviors. Save your face with these breakthroughs!

Case 1: Acne

Investigation Points

Clogged pores, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed skin lesions and tiny" bumps with general redness.

Suspected Causes

Overproduction of sebum, accumulation of dead skin and bacteria in pores, hormonal changes, and stress.

Report Analysis

They lied! We don't outgrow acne even long after blowing out our sweet 16 candles. Britney Spears should know - she battles with breakout bouts every so often, most recently during her pregnancy. Acne usually goes hand-in-hand with oily complexion, but zealously blotting and washing your face won't help. In fact, overdrying your skin would further stimulate oil glands. Contrary to popular half-truths, a diet rich in oil, sugar or fat doesn't contribute to acne. But it sure wouldn't hurt to munch on more veggies and fruits for more skin-friendly vitamins and antioxidants.

Case Breakthrough!

Stick religiously to a proper cleansing regime. You can't go wrong by washing your face twice daily with a mild medicated cleanser. It usually contains ingredients that work on the bacteria-causing acne. Ban yourself from picking, popping and poking your zits to squeeze out the pus. It'll only send it to the deeper layers of your skin and worsen the inflammation. Keep your hair out of your face and use a spot treatment to bring down the swelling and redness.

Case 2: Premature Ageing

Investigation Points

Fine lines around eyes and mouth, loss in skin elasticity (especially around the eyes, cheeks and jaw), dryness and open pores.

Suspected Causes

Photoageing, stress, heredity, smoking, inadequate diet and lack of exercise.

Report Analysis

Tick tock, hear that? Who wants to look like an older version of herself? Your eyes are typically the first to show signs of ageing. The supportive underlying tissue weakens and produces visible bags and swelling, resulting in a tired-looking face. The natural process of ageing diminishes collagen levels and elastin fibres that give skin its buoyancy and suppleness - that's why lines and wrinkles set in. Harmful free radicals from the environment also break down healthy cells. The effects creep onto your face in the form of dullness.

Case Breakthrough!

Everybody ages! But you can slow down the process significantly by making some lifestyle changes. We don't care if we sound like a broken record by now, we'll say it again: Sun protection is your best defense! Never step out of the house without sunscreen. Invest in a good moisturiser to plump up skin, fight free radicals and replenish the water loss. Skip the ice cream (excess sugar buildup makes skin more vulnerable to ageing) and snack on fresh fruits instead - the antioxidants of vitamins A, C and E help soak up the free radicals. And if clubbing's still your thing, be warned. Smoke, excessive alcohol and lack of steep activate the fast-ageing brigade.

Case 3: Hyperpigmentation

Investigation Points

Dark spots, uneven skin texture, freckles and generally lacklustre skin.

Suspected Causes

Unprotected sun exposure.

Report Analysis

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? Not you, if you continue to bake under the sun, Sun rays consist of UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are mostly absorbed by the skin's epidermis (the outermost layer), which we see often as sunburn. UVA rays wreck the most havoc though - they travel in longer wavelengths than UVB and penetrate deeply into skin, triggering the activity of melanocytes within its deeper layers. Melanocytes cause melanin production to increase, creating dark spots and patches on the face! The moment the spots and freckles start to appear, they signal even more pigmentation to come. Intense stress invariably boosts chill whenever you can!

Case Breakthrough!

The state of luminous, crystal clear skin is never going to be within reach if you continue to worship the sun. However, using brightening products without a sunscreen is a waste of time. Get one with at least SPF 15, and that contains the UVA-protecting ingredients of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone. If you've been bad, there are a host of brightening products out there to minimise the effects of sun damage. And you must be living in the dark ages if you worry about these products being too powerful, and leaving your face as fair as Michael Jackson. They work to restore a brighter, clearer and more translucent complexion, while reducing the dark spots. But it might take some time before you see results as cell turnover takes four to eight weeks.

Case 4: For Everything In Between

Investigation Points

Acne scars, age spots, wrinkles, sags, uneven skin texture and dilated pores.

Suspected Causes

Ageing, scarring and sun exposure.

Report Analysis

Though there's a frenzy for nip/tucks, you don't have to go that far to make a dramatic difference. The beauty industry has taken a leaf from the field of cosmetics surgery and dermatology, and has come up with breakthrough i^ eliminating skin roughness, scars, wrinkles and open pores. You may think wrinkles are light year away, but the constant contracting a lead to the formation of expression lines eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes and mouth. Au the sins of youth such as messing with your zits and not taking proper care of your skin could be erased with these dean-inspired products. They yield immediate and visible line-filling, face-lifting, pore-closing, dark-spot erasing and scar-smoothening results!

Case Breakthrough!

Derm-inspired products can be separated into two main types - exfoliating and filling. Exfoliating would consist of products that basically work like a microdermabrasion or a peel. AHAs, glycolic acids or micro crystals such as aluminium oxide are common ingredients in these products as they're mild enough for DIY use, with hardly any adverse effects. They remove dead cells and the damaged outer layers of the skin, revealing "new" skin. Pigmentation and scars are lightened, the complexion is refined and fine tines are reduced as the new layer of skin stimulates collagen production. Line fitters follow the same principle as Botox or a collagen jab. It is literally the hollowing out of lines and wrinkles with proteins and collagens. Skin is levelled out, smoothened and firmed up as your lines get filled.
