Cancer - The Number One Killer

Cancer is a group of diseases where there is uncontrolled multiplication of abnormal cells forming an abnormal growth. (Not all growths are cancerous - some growths are non-cancerous or "benign".) Cancer cells can multiply quickly and invade surrounding tissues and organs. They can spread all over the body to other organs and tissues, a process called metastasis.

Many forms of cancer are lifestyle-related, meaning they are caused by the way we live. Known risk factors include smoking and an unhealthy diet. It has been estimated that one third of all cancers can be prevented by just leading a healthy lifestyle. Smoking is the cause for 90% of lung cancer cases and is also linked to many other types of caner.

A diet high in red meat and low in vegetable and fruit is a major risk factor for cancer of the large intestine and rectum, especially if there is a family history. Eating more vegetable, fruit and whole-meal products and less fat will lower the risk of getting colorectal cancer.

Warning Signs Of Cancer

Remember, one-third of all cancers can be cured if detected early. Here are some warning signs of caner:

  • Change in bowel habits e.g. chronic constipation
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Unusual discharge or bleeding
  • A lump in the breast
  • Change in an existing mole or wart
  • Persistent difficulty in swallowing or indigestion
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness of voice
  • Deafness and ringing in the same ear

Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment today includes surgery (removal of strong drugs to destroy cancer cells) and radiation (use of high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells). Still the best way of beating cancer is prevention. Start leading a healthy lifestyle and reduce your cancer risk!

Suspected Cancer Causing Substances In Our Diet

Fatty Foods

A high-fat diet is linked to colorectal and breast cancer.

Nitrites And Nitrates

These are found in preserved meats, and are converted in the stomach to nitrosamines which may cause cancer.

Salt-cured Fish And Meat

Nose and throat caner is more common among people who eat salt-cured fish and meat.

Alcohol

Apart from liver cancer, alcohol is also linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, stomach and large intestine.

Pickled Foods

Pickled and other highly acidic foods have been linked to stomach cancer.

Screen Prostate Cancer

Harvard Researcher may have fond a new way to screen for prostate cancer. After collecting urine sample sample from 121 men, they tested for thymosin beta-15, a cancer marker. Men with prostate cancer and normal PSAs had higher levels. Researchers are honing the test's accuracy to submit it to the FDA.

Kiss Cancer Goodbye

Mononucleosis is making a comeback-as a key to fighting cancer. Turns out the immune system's response to the Epstein-Barr virus, instigator of mono, may combat throat cancer Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine administered a single treatment of T cells (which the body manufactures to fight Epstein-Barr) to To patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Two years later six of the patients were disease free. Additional research is underway.
