Anthrax And Bomb Threats

What Is Anthrax?

Anthrax is an animal disease caused by bacteria. Although the powdery form of anthrax is not contagious, it still remain as a threat to public safety. You should stay calm but be vigilant against any possible threat.

Handling Suspected Anthrax Scare

These are the procedures of what to do when you received an anthrax threat by mail.

  • Never handle the mail piece or package suspected of contamination. Cover the spilled contents immediately with something (e.g. paper, clothing, trash can, etc.) if the package is opened already. Never attempt to recover the cover.
  • Never stiff or attempt to help clean up the spilled material or brushing it off from any clothing. This will spread the anthrax!
  • Look for all local fan and ventilation units in the surrounding and turn it off.
  • To prevent the spread of the powder, wash your hands with soap and water immediately.
  • Then leave the room. Remember to close the door or section off the area to prevent or alert others from entering (i.e. keep others away).
  • Put all items that are in direct contact with the suspicious package like clothing iii plastic bags or container that can be sealed. Make them available for the police.
  • Take a shower with soap and water as soon as possible. Never use bleach or other disinfectant on your skin.
  • Note down all people who have touched the envelope or letter. Include their contact information and have this vital information available for the relevant authorities.

Bomb Threats

All of us are not necessarily spared from such bomb threats as the numbers of reported bomb threats has increased. Potential bomb threats will cause loss of human lives and assets and infrastructure will be threatened too. If there is such a threat, you may be required to evacuate the building you are in.

Evacuation Of The Building

  • Do not panick, instead exit the building in an orderly and calm manner.
  • Never attempt to use the elevators as you can get trapped in them.
  • Always look out for and follow the directions of the emergency responders/floor wardens.
  • Proceed to the assembly area as signal by the emergency responders..

If You See A Suspicious Object Or An Unexploded Bomb

  • Don't be curious. Never touch, warm or attempt to move it.
  • Move away immediately and warn people in the surrounding about it.
  • Dial and report immediately to the police and provides as many details as possible.
