Trace Your Roots

If you've never tried tracing your family heritage, there is no time like the present to take pleasure in the past. Simply follow our steps.

Step 1 Get In Touch

Pick a pen and connect with family members. Explain your relationship and make it clear that you are looking for information to learn more about your family. If you suspect some 'skeletons', tread lightly. Be polite, and include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Step 2 Bring Up The Past

Get several relatives together and talk. Whether at a family wedding, picnic table, or even a funeral, such conversations will bring up family history tidbits.

Step 3 Put Ancestors In Their Place

Every good story takes place in an environment. Gone With the Wind took place in Atlanta. The Good Earth took place in rural China. If you are serious about your roots, you must also get to know the environments in which your ancestors live.

Step 4 Save Family Treasures

People often pass on furniture, dishes and personal items such as watches and jewelry. If you have these objects in your house, do you know their history? Other priceless heirlooms include family recipes and holiday decorations. Keep them well.

Step 5 Safekeep Your Child's Memories

Mothers can be the keepers of their children's childhood memories. When you present them with their favourite stuffed toys 20 years later, you also present them with an opportunity to ask you about your memories.
