Checking For A Change Of Heart

Fight For Your Heart

Your heart is like a stage on which heroes and villains slug it out for ultimate survival. Find out who they are and how you can help the good guys prevail over the baddies.

The Do-Gooders

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): It is also known as "good cholesterol" - a high level lowers your risk of heart disease. HDL also flushes out excess bad cholesterol and some experts believe that it slows the buildup of plaque in the arteries. To raise your HDL, include avocado, nuts and olive oil in your diet.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These keep arteries clear so blood can pump more efficiently through your heart to deliver oxygen-rich blood to your organs. Like HDL, Omega-3 fatty acids also carry toxins to the liver for disposal. Have at least two helpings of oily fish like salmon for maximum benefits.

The Baddies

Triglycerides: Calories not used immediately are converted to triglycerides and transported to fat cells to be stored. A high level of it has been linked to coronary artery disease. People with high triglycerides need to limit their intake of refined Garbs like candy, white bread and white rice.

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Too much of this "bad cholesterol" leads to plaque buildup in the arteries of the heart and the brain. Once a clot forms, you could suffer a heart attack or a stroke. Red meat, full-fat dairy and fried foods are the main culprits. If you can't improve your LDL levels with a low saturated-fat diet and regular exercise, you may have to took into prescribed medication.
