The Numbers That Can Kill

Your blood pressure and fasting glucose can mean life or death.

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) elevates the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The increased pressure damages the arteries and makes the heart work harder. Over time, this may give rise to coronary heart failure. For ideal blood pressure, experts recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and medication - reducing salt in food, giving up stimulants such as alcohol and coffee and exercising regularly.

Reducing stress physical or emotional is important, as it also heightens blood pressure by adopting a rational and calm approach when dealing with problems. If you fund yourself getting easily riled, try to be more patient and forgiving of others.

Fasting Glucose Level

The fasting blood glucose test measures the amount of sugar in your blood after an overnight fast of eight hours. One is said to suffer from diabetes if the test returns a value of 126 mg/dl, or higher. This occurs when the body does not produce or use insulin properly, leading to high sugar levels in the blood.

Diabetes is closely linked to cardiovascular diseases as it irritates the blood vessel walls. This in turn affects cholesterol levels adversely and increases blood pressure. To bring diabetes under control, follow a strict diet and exercise regularly.
