How To "Cool Off"

Here are some simple ways to lower your body temperature when you have a fever:

  • Drink plenty of fluids like cold water and fruit juices.
  • Check: your body temperature every 4 hours if you have a clinical thermometer at home.
  • Take fever medicine like paracetamol
  • Sponge your body with cold water or take a shower.
  • Rest in a room with the fan or air conditioner on.
  • Do not cover yourself with blankets and thick clothes.

See your doctor if your fever does not improve or if you experience anything out of the ordinary, like stiff neck, rash, ear pain, abdominal pain, severe sore throat or cough and frequent urination.

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is the passing of loose, watery stools several times a day. Diarrhoea becomes dangerous when your body loses so much fluids chat you become dehydrated. The most common causes of diarrhoea are:

Viral Infection

Many viral infections cause diarrhoea, for example, "intestinal flu".

Food Poisoning

This results from eating food contaminated because of unhygienic preparation or storage.

Allergy

Some people are allergic to certain foods or medicines and these can cause them to have diarrhoea.
  • Be sure to drink a lot of fluids to replace the water loss in the stools.
  • Take only soft foods like porridge so as nor to overwork your intestines. When your diarrhoea lessens, you can resume normal meals.
  • Get enough rest, especially if you feel giddy. Avoid strenuous exercise until you recover from the diarrhoea.
  • Your doctor may prescribe some medication e.g. lomotil or kaolin mixture. Medication to relieve other symptoms such as nausea vomiting, abdominal pain or fever may also be needed.
