Which LCD Screen To Buy?

Ultimately, your decision is predicated on what you will use it for most of the time. Read on for shopping tips. To find out which Liquid Crystal Display or LCD monitor is ideal for you, decide which one of the following three functions is most important to you:

For Business

The largest and highest resolution will provide greater working space. Most 17-inch displays have 1280 x 1024 pixel resolutions but with small screens and very small fonts and menus. A 19-inch display with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024, is recommended.

For Entertainment

Response time is key if the LCD is intended chiefly for computer gaming or watching movies. Response time is the reaction time for the screen pixels to fire up an image. Slower time results in ghosting or blurred images during fast action sequences. Look for a response time below 12 milliseconds.

For Graphics Work

Color reproduction accuracy is critical for graphic designers and for photographers working with digital images. Make sure the LCD can reproduce true color without delay. True color is also known as 24-bit color (16.7 million colors not 16.2 million colors, the later is 18-bit color). In order to render color better, the LCD needs to have high brightness and high contrast. Look for 250 to 300 nits (A nit is a measurement unit of luminance) and a contrast ratio between 600:1 and 1000:1.

Basic specifications aside, know that additions and upgrades are commonplace as the LCD market grows. You will find "wide-screen" variants that are ideal (with respect to the screen size ratio) for watching DVD movies or for displaying large spreadsheets. The LCDs will also feature multiple-signal inputs for connecting other signals like a video camera, TV tuner and more. If your video card permits, choose a LCD display with a DVI (Digital Visual Interface) input connector or, better yet, a LCD that has dual input: a DVI and an analog VGA. This will keep you on the technology curve.
