Post Abortion Guilt

Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS) or Post-Abortive Stress Syndrome describes the emotional and psychological consequences of abortion. Women most at risk are those who:

  • Are emotionally unstable, with unstable living conditions.
  • Felt pressure to have an abortion from their partners or parents.
  • Chose an abortion because of a genetic problem with the foetus.
  • Had an abortion after the first trimester. w, Had strong religious beliefs against abortion.

Many women experiencing PAS have never recognised the need to grieve the loss of their aborted baby or come to terms that they have aborted a real human baby. There is also the issue of guilt and forgiveness, from God and those involved in the abortion decision. You will know you are on your way to healing when you accept responsibility for the part you played in the abortion decision, can speak openly (not compulsively) about it and have forgiven all involved.

It helps to talk about your loss with others who have gone through the same experience. Ask yourself what you've learned from this experience and how you will now do things differently. You may now start to think about all the other options you could have taken but that's dust hindsight so don't flagellate yourself over a decision you made when your state of mind was totally different. What's important is what you do from this day forward.
