Finding A Worthwhile Cause

Once we've decided something is worth committing to, that's when the roller coaster ride really begins. We shut all our backdoors, we strap ourselves in, and we expect that there will be ups and downs. Only the foolish or naive delude themselves into thinking that commitment comes with no obstacles.

But one of the most beautiful and powerful things I've realised about human beings is that we hold within us the power to create our own happiness. Human beings have created many things from nothing sculptures, paintings, melodies, novels and poems, suspension bridges. We have created awareness for child prostitution and the plight of Afghan women. We have created families, communities, friendships.

With intention, women have created trust and intimacy in their broken marriages, passion and spontaneity amidst the humdrum of life, meaning in their work, purpose in their lives. Nobel Prize laureate, George Bernard Shaw, writes. "Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last you create what you will."

It's sad that so many women today feel empty and yearn to be filled with love, approval and affirmation. We see ourselves as empty vessels that need to be constantly filled by others. If only we can realise that joy isn't created from the inside. Let us learn from women like Mother Teresa, Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou. When we give of ourselves, and commit to things we truly believe in, we are truly filled up.

Greatest Lesson In Life

The greatest lesson is that life has a formula for success. If we do four things consistently, we will ensure ourselves of a good life while enhancing the lives of others:

  • Develop and maintain a positive attitude.

  • Be kind to other people.

  • Work hard, to the best of your ability.

  • Be a person of honesty and integrity.
