A Fresh Start

Start your day off with these invigorating poses. There's nothing more refreshing than starting off the day with a few Sun Salutations and pranayama (breathing practice). However, it's not always easy to squeeze it in before you rush off to work. The best way to make up for that lack of time is to it in the one place you find yourself every morning - bed!

Supine Twist

This is good for circulation and keeping the spine supple.
  • Extend one leg while you bend the other leg in towards your chest.
  • Inhale and bring arms to shoulder level to give support.
  • Lower the bent knee slowly on an exhale to the opposite side of the body (example: left knee bent, bring left leg over to right side of body as in picture) for a gentle spinal twist, without forcing the leg down. Rest in this position for few cycles of breath, before inhaling to bring the leg back to centre.
  • Repeat on other side.

Nose To Knees

Another good stretching pose.
  • Bend your knees to your chest, wrap your arms around them and hold them tight against your body. Lift your head and bring your nose in between your knees. With strong breathing pumping your navel, hold for about 30 seconds to one minute.

How To Prep For Class?

  • Arrive for class about 15 minutes early as this will give you time to relax and switch your mind off work. Sit in a quiet corner and take deep breaths to centre yourself.
  • To calm your mind, try these breathing techniques. From the diaphragm, inhale deeply. Inhale for five counts, then slowly exhale for five counts. This breathing exercise is especially helpful in moments of high stress and tension. Another one to try is to allow your exhalation to be twice as long as your inhalation.
  • Bring a yoga mat if you have one. Purchasing your own is recommended for hygiene purposes.
  • Wear clothing that you can move freely in. Bring a change of clothes for after class.
  • Bring a towel and water to refresh yourself after class.
  • Don't eat a large meal at least two hours before class.
  • Don't wear heavily scented perfumes and lotions as senses are heightened by yoga practice and ujjayi (loud) breathing.
  • Don't go to class if you're not well. See a doctor instead.
